Nationwide Heatwave Alerts Issued Amidst Soaring Temperatures
The India Meteorological Department has issued red level heatwave warnings for more than 100 districts across Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and parts of central India as temperatures soar past 47°C in several regions. The prolonged heatwave, among the worst in decades, is attributed to dry westerly winds, deficient pre monsoon rainfall, and delayed cloud cover movement. Cities like Jaipur, Varanasi, and Nagpur are reporting record breaking temperatures, prompting emergency health advisories, school closures, and limits on outdoor labor. Government hospitals are seeing increased cases of heatstroke and dehydration, especially among the elderly and children. Water tankers and mist cooling shelters have been deployed in urban slums, while rural health workers are conducting door to door checks. Several state electricity grids are under pressure due to increased cooling demand. The National Disaster Management Authority is coordinating relief efforts with state governments. Experts note that India is facing increasingly frequent and intense heatwaves due to climate change, and urban heat islands are exacerbating conditions. Calls are growing for better urban planning, increased tree cover, and stronger climate adaptation policies.
