Thiruvananthapuram Smart Parking Begins
Thiruvananthapuram has launched Kerala’s first AI powered Smart Parking System, aimed at easing urban congestion and improving commuter convenience. Developed by the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation in partnership with a private tech firm, the system uses sensors, license plate recognition, and a mobile app to manage over 2,000 parking spots in key commercial and residential areas. Motorists can reserve slots in advance, pay digitally, and receive real time updates on availability. The app also suggests alternate spots when full and features dynamic pricing during peak hours. This initiative is part of the city’s Smart City Mission goals and includes features to reduce illegal parking and traffic bottlenecks. Local traffic police have integrated the platform into their operations, enabling remote enforcement and auto generated fines. Feedback from the public has been largely positive, with reduced parking search times and better traffic flow reported within weeks of launch. The system will soon be expanded to government offices, hospitals, and tourist zones. Authorities are considering linking it to electric vehicle charging infrastructure as well. The success of this project positions Thiruvananthapuram as a smart mobility leader in South India.
