Ahmedabad Gets Smart Traffic System
Ahmedabad has taken a major leap toward becoming a smart city with the launch of an AI powered Smart Traffic Management System (STMS). Implemented under the Smart Cities Mission, the system is designed to reduce congestion, enhance commuter safety, and improve traffic discipline using real time analytics. Developed by Tata Elxsi and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), the new system covers over 120 traffic junctions across the city. It employs AI driven cameras, adaptive traffic signals, automatic number plate recognition (ANPR), and violation detection mechanisms. Real time traffic data is fed into a central command center that can remotely adjust signal timings based on congestion levels. The system also features emergency green corridors for ambulances and fire services. Traffic violations like red light jumping and wrong way driving are automatically recorded and generate e challans, promoting better enforcement. Commuters can access live traffic updates, parking availability, and alternate routes via a new city mobility app. In the pilot phase, the system led to a 15% improvement in traffic flow and reduced average commute time by nearly 20%. Ahmedabad, one of India’s fastest growing urban centers, has long faced challenges of vehicular growth and road safety. Authorities believe the STMS will revolutionize urban mobility and position the city as a benchmark in smart infrastructure. Future plans include integrating public transport, EV charging stations, and pedestrian safety measures into the broader system.
