First 3D Printed Home Inaugurated

India’s first fully functional 3D printed house has been inaugurated at the IIT Madras campus, ushering in a new era of rapid, sustainable, and affordable housing. Built by the startup Tvasta Manufacturing Solutions in collaboration with the institute’s civil engineering department, the one bedroom unit was printed in just 21 days using a concrete mix designed specifically for 3D printing. Unlike conventional methods, this process requires minimal labor, zero formwork, and produces less construction waste. The house is resistant to earthquakes, weather changes, and complies with Indian building standards. The initiative aligns with the PM Awas Yojana and aims to revolutionize housing for the economically weaker sections. The success of this pilot project has already attracted attention from state governments and private real estate developers. Tvasta is also working on disaster relief shelters and multi story buildings using the same technology. The innovation offers promising solutions for India's urban housing shortage, especially in disaster prone or remote areas. This milestone positions India among the few nations globally to adopt 3D construction for livable structures. Future projects will include schools, hospitals, and community centers using 3D printing, emphasizing speed, sustainability, and cost efficiency. The government plans to create a regulatory framework for this emerging sector, with support from housing and urban development ministries.
