IMD Issues Cyclone 'Vardha' Alert Along Eastern Seaboard
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the eastern coastal states of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha as Cyclone 'Vardha' intensifies in the Bay of Bengal. Expected to make landfall within 48 hours, the cyclone is projected to bring wind speeds of up to 130 km/h, torrential rain, and storm surges along low lying areas. Evacuations are underway in over 400 villages, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deployed with over 30 teams. Fishing operations have been suspended, and all coastal schools will remain closed. Relief camps are being prepared with COVID protocols in place. The IMD says the cyclone’s path is being closely monitored using satellite and radar technology. Experts warn that climate change is causing more frequent and intense storms in the region. Government authorities are urging residents to stay indoors and follow emergency alerts.
