New Attendance App Transforms School Monitoring System

The Education Ministry has officially launched ‘Shiksha Track’, a mobile app designed to modernize attendance tracking across India’s government schools. The app allows real time recording of both student and teacher attendance using GPS and facial recognition technology. Piloted in states like Karnataka and Gujarat, the system has shown a significant drop in absenteeism and unauthorized leave. The app also offers parents updates on their child's attendance and homework via SMS. Administrators can monitor trends and flag anomalies, helping address long standing issues like proxy attendance and ghost teachers. Teachers' unions have raised privacy concerns, especially regarding facial recognition, prompting the ministry to allow states to choose between biometric or manual verification. The app integrates with the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE+) and is expected to bring transparency and accountability. The government aims for 100% adoption by March 2026.
