Blockchain Powered Digital Voter ID Pilot Launched in Telangana, Eyes National Rollout
The Election Commission of India, in collaboration with IIIT Hyderabad and the Ministry of Electronics & IT, has launched a pilot blockchain system for secure voter identity verification in Telangana. This decentralized ledger ensures tamper proof authentication and allows voters to cast ballots through verified apps, with biometric and Aadhaar linked security. Field trials in Warangal district achieved 99.3% identity match accuracy. While online voting is not yet approved, officials say the system could reduce electoral fraud and eliminate duplicate voter IDs. A phased rollout to urban centers is planned before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
