Heavy Snowfall Transforms Kashmir Valley After Dry Spell
Kashmir experienced significant snowfall in early 2025, bringing relief after a period of relatively dry winter conditions. Higher reaches of North Kashmir, particularly Gulmarg and Gurez, recorded impressive accumulations of nearly 15 inches of wet snow, with some elevated areas witnessing up to 2 feet of snow cover. The plains in Kupwara district received 1 to 4 inches, while higher elevations saw accumulations of up to 1.5 feet. Central Kashmir locations like Sonamarg and Doodhpathri received nearly 10 inches of fresh snowfall within just two hours during intense weather systems. The snowfall proved crucial for the region's tourism industry, which had been concerned about minimal snow cover during the previous winter season. Local weather authorities reported that the precipitation coincided with the traditional 40 day Chillai Kalan period, when chances of snowfall are typically highest and temperatures drop considerably. The fresh snow cover not only delighted tourists and adventure enthusiasts but also provided much needed water reserves for the region's rivers and lakes. Agricultural experts noted that the snowfall would benefit spring crops and fruit orchards, particularly apple cultivation, which depends heavily on adequate winter precipitation for optimal yields.
