Hyderabad Launches Night Buses

Hyderabad has launched an ambitious Night Bus Service aimed at providing safe, reliable, and affordable public transport during late hours. Operated by the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC), this service targets IT employees, airport travelers, night shift workers, and emergency commuters. The initiative includes 100 buses operating across major routes between 10 PM and 5 AM, with connectivity to key IT hubs like Hitech City, Gachibowli, Secunderabad, and the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. These buses are equipped with GPS tracking, CCTV cameras, panic buttons, and real time display panels to ensure safety and transparency. Conductors and drivers have undergone sensitivity training, especially with an emphasis on women’s safety. Each route is monitored by a central command system, and dedicated helpline numbers are displayed inside every bus. Ticket prices remain subsidized, with digital payment options and monthly night passes available. The move comes after growing demand for extended hour transportation, especially as Hyderabad strengthens its position as a 24x7 global business hub. Public feedback during pilot runs was overwhelmingly positive, with increased ridership reported even during early morning hours. TSRTC also plans to introduce electric buses in the night fleet in the next phase. Experts view this as a key step in reducing dependence on private transport, enhancing mobility equity, and fostering a safer urban environment at night. The initiative has already garnered interest from other metropolitan cities as a replicable model.
