Lucknow Introduces Green Buses
In a bold move toward sustainable urban transport, Lucknow has launched a fleet of 150 electric buses under its Green Mobility Initiative. The project, jointly implemented by the Lucknow Municipal Corporation and Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC), aims to curb rising air pollution and promote eco friendly commuting. The electric buses, manufactured by Tata Motors and Olectra Greentech, are equipped with zero emission engines, regenerative braking systems, and modern passenger amenities like Wi Fi, CCTV, and automated fare collection. The buses will operate on major city routes including Hazratganj, Charbagh, Gomti Nagar, and the airport corridor. Charging depots with solar integration have been set up at key terminals, ensuring operational efficiency and minimal downtime. The initiative is funded through a combination of state support and central subsidies under the FAME II scheme (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles). Public response during initial runs has been positive, with commuters appreciating the noise free ride and clean interiors. The introduction of electric buses is expected to reduce over 8,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually. Training programs have been rolled out for drivers and technicians, ensuring smooth maintenance and safety compliance. The Lucknow Smart City mission also includes future integration with metro stations and last mile e rickshaws for a fully electric ecosystem. Officials believe this is a foundational step in transforming Lucknow into a cleaner, more efficient, and future ready urban center. The move also aligns with India’s broader climate goals and net zero commitments.
