Monsoon Hits Kerala Coast

The southwest monsoon has officially arrived in Kerala, marking the beginning of the rainy season across India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced the onset two days earlier than the expected date, following the fulfillment of meteorological criteria such as widespread rainfall, consistent wind patterns, and cloud cover over the Arabian Sea. Coastal areas like Thiruvananthapuram, Alappuzha, and Kozhikode have already received substantial rainfall, with water levels rising in major rivers and reservoirs. The monsoon is expected to advance toward Karnataka, Maharashtra, and the northeastern states in the coming week. Farmers across India eagerly track the monsoon's progress, as it supports over 60% of the country’s agricultural output. The state government has activated disaster response protocols, ensuring that vulnerable areas prone to landslides and flash floods are equipped with rescue teams and relief materials. The Kerala State Electricity Board has issued alerts regarding power line disruptions, while schools in hilly districts have been advised to shift to remote learning for the week. Fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea due to high tides and gusty winds. The onset of the monsoon also brings relief from scorching summer temperatures. IMD forecasts a normal monsoon for 2025, which bodes well for India’s agricultural and economic outlook. While the rains are a welcome sight, authorities stress the importance of preparedness in the face of climate change induced erratic weather.
